Where Has the Excitement Gone? This Drop of Open-Play Goal Scoring
A major talking point of England's top flight season so far concerns the decline of goals scored in open-play scenarios and how clubs are netting increasingly from dead-ball situations as an alternative.
When we compare goal sources to matchday 11 the prior season, there have been a drop of 39 scored in open-play and an increase of 26 from set-plays and penalties, leading to 13 less in total.
If we look at the bigger picture, the number of shots teams are taking have seen a remarkable 370 fewer in open play than at this stage last season.
Regardless of the notable jump in dead-ball scores, records show a mere two extra shots generated from them excluding spot-kicks, indicating how effective clubs have been at devising strategies to score from set-pieces.
Goal Averages Reveal an Interesting Narrative
Over 300 goals notched in the first 110 fixtures to date works out at nearly 2.75 goals per fixture, if maintained for the whole season could be the least for since 2020-21, from five seasons ago (2.69 average).
But just 196 goals coming in open-play averages out 1.78 per fixture and is tracking to be the smallest for 16 seasons, back in 2009-10 (1.76 average).
The 2009-10 season also marks the only Premier League season to experience scoring more often from dead-balls without spot-kicks than this season's rate of 0.77 each match (0.79 per game).
Which Teams Are Most Responsible?
In terms of scoring from open play, Wolves have recorded the most significant drop, netting a mere four in their first 11 fixtures, 10 less than at this stage the previous campaign.
Apart from Wolverhampton, the EPL's decline in open play goals is very much a London phenomenon, with five out of the London's seven clubs netting a minimum of five fewer goals from open play than the prior season.
To be fair, this is primarily due to them netting many scores at the beginning of last season rather than them really struggling to convert in open play this campaign.
At the same time Man City have seen the biggest increase, with all but one of their 23 scores this season arriving in open play.
Set-Play Proficiency
Looking at the promoted teams with the teams that went down that they superseded. Play-off winners the Black Cats have netted an additional three scores in open play than Southampton did in matchday 11 leading to demotion the previous campaign.
When it comes to scoring from set-plays (excluding penalties), the Gunners and Chelsea have seen the most significant jump, with each team compensating for the reduction of five goals that they've netted in open play with the same number from dead-ball situations.
Manchester United have scored two times more goals from set-plays as they achieved in matchday 11 last season before the manager assumed control, while Sunderland again have been more successful at netting than the fellow red-and-whites they superseded.
Man City appear not to have received the memo about increasing scoring from set-pieces, since they've recorded three less than last season, like Nottingham Forest, even if this could be because of the altered approach they've attempted to adopt.
General Tendencies
Six teams – the Gunners, the Blues, the Cottagers, Newcastle, Spurs and the Hammers – have been this term's primary examples by netting less scores from open play and more from set-pieces, while City represent the only side to go against the grain so far by achieving the contrary.
It remains to be seen to watch if sides persist to rely so heavily on set-pieces as the campaign progresses or if they rediscover their general attacking flair and start converting increased totals in open-play as well.
