Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

What next for these two sides?

The Toffees: Moyes' men head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: The London club travel to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup match against the Magpies.
