Puzzling Pink Slime on Remote Tasmanian Coast Prompts Fears of Possible Algae Outbreak

Agencies in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has materialized on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers anxious it could be an algae outbreak.

The rosy-colored ooze appeared along a section of Randalls Bay about 60km south of Hobart. A like substance has also been recorded on parts of a nearby shore and Little Taylors Bay.

Samples have been collected and sent to the environmental agency for testing. A official remarked that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural event in response to variations in food sources, temperature, precipitation or light".

The scientist said sea sparkle did not produce harmful substances similar to the type involved in that severe outbreak, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were in greatest danger.

"Typically one notices a bloom of the organism after a outbreak of something else, or an event such as a salmon or coral spawning event," she said.

Lilly Henley, who collected samples of the rosy slime in the state, said it looked like the suspected bloom had "expanded greatly" and suggested the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to comparable events in other places.

"Therefore we needs to send a clear message here, the officials and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to study the samples we've gathered and we need to inform the people here," she stated.

She expressed she had worries for community health after experiencing a numbness along her body while being splashed with tainted seawater.

An conservation group has stated lifeless animals and deceased marine life being found on the beach, with a prominent conservationist describing the situation as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the state premier to see and "lead the reaction that authorities must be making".
