Aaron Rai Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster final round of competition.
Rai nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
Rai entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged a stroke ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Playoff Decider
That set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing one shot short in a shared third place with the Dane, after a spectacular 10-under final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.
The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round 63 to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australian Daniel Hillier.
